Benefits to Dog Ownership
There are many benefits to adding a furry family member to your home that reach beyond the excitement of bringing home a new puppy. We know there are many physical and emotional benefits to having a puppy or dog in your home. Canine companions are doing amazing things in people’s lives. Dogs are aiding their owners in growth and happiness by touching our lives in many ways. Here are just a few amazing benefits that a puppy or dog may bring into your family’s life.
Improved Physical Health Many studies have shown that pets improve our physical health. There are numerous examples and stories of improved health related to bringing a dog into the family. Families with dogs are typically more physically active since dogs make great exercise companions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have conducted studies showing that lower blood pressure and cholesterol have been linked to pet ownership. These two benefits alone lower the risk of heart attack for pet owners. Contrary to popular belief, many studies have also shown that having a puppy in your home helps lower the likelihood of children developing allergies.
Improved Mental and Emotional Health Studies show that having a puppy or dog in your home is good for your emotional and mental well being. “We found that pet owners, on average, were better off than non-owners, especially when they have a higher-quality relationship with their pets,” says pet researcher Allen R. McConnell, PhD. He’s a professor of psychology at Miami University.” Having a pet has been linked to improved heart health, lower stress, improved mood and greater meaning (http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/features/6-ways-pets-improve-your-health#1). Dogs and puppies have an amazing ability to help us deal with emotional trauma. Many puppies have become service, support or therapy dogs. They work wonders with ex-military members and others struggling with PTSD. Here at Bodybuilder Bulldogs we work to place many of our retired adults in homes with retired service men and women. We feel this is one way we can give back and to show one of the amazing qualities of Olde English Bulldogges and English Bulldogs.
They are great for children Some parents may be hesitant to bring a furry companion into their home because they do not know how it will affect their children. There is no doubt that some breeds are better with children than others. This is one of the reasons we love Olde English Bulldogges and English Bulldogs. In our experience (we have four children of young ages), these breeds are amazing with kids. They exhibit almost limitless patience, love, loyalty and care with kids. Olde English Bulldogges have the necessary energy to be great play companions with kids but also are happy to be a couch potato while watching the kid’s favorite movie. Also, caring for a puppy is a great way for children to learn responsibility, compassion, discipline and planning. They are also a great way for kids and parents to enjoy quality time together. There are many other benefits to have a puppy in your home and we hope you discover many more for your own family.
